Desalination

Desalination is the process of removing salt from seawater so that it is drinkable.

It’s a simple concept, but a complex and expensive process.

As part of the South Australian Government’s four-way strategy, we must relieve the pressure on the River Murray, while still guaranteeing Adelaide's water supply.

So we're building a desalination plant at Port Stanvac, which will deliver about one quarter of our water needs. A $10 million pilot plant is already operational and testing the technology for treating water .

The project will be carbon neutral and will help secure Adelaide\'s water supply for years to come... A separate plant is being planned by BHP Billiton in the Upper Spencer Gulf.
